My Bio
A childhood filled with memories of climbing trees, swimming in mountain streams, running through mushroom strewn farmland and the warm steamy stink of cowpats. Tramping, camping, caving and exploring, life in New Zealand was, and still is, a privilege for which I am extremely grateful.

My favourite subject in photography is the power of natural forces - wind, water, fire and light and how they affect their surroundings.
Colour is my constant delight and frustration and ND filters and long exposures are my new best friends ;)

Favourite time of day: waiting for the dawn

Favourite Visual Artist

Anything by Studio Ghibli

Tired, suffering from a cold and grumpy, I almost didn't go out to take sunset photos tonight but 'what if I miss something spectacular?' kept running round my head so I crawled out on the bicycle just for a quick look.  Very glad I did as I got to see the rare sight of sundogs - an optical effect where multiple copies of the sun seem to be visible at once, as well as solar rings and some fantastic light effects as one front scattered and storm clouds moved in.  Once I finish up the processing of the raw files i'll post the results :)

RAWR!

0 min read
So I finally got around to using RAW files rather than the default JPG setting on my 550D.  The sheer amount of info that I was losing in using JPGs was quite staggering and after installing UFRAW for the Gimp (I'm a Ubuntu Linux user) I am now happily adjusting, mixing and otherwise weirding out my photos!  No photos for a few days tho until i get over the 'child with new crayons' phase ;)

Today was all about clouds as I sat and waited for the storm to approach.  Vast pillars of cloud boiled upwards from the north forming ominous thunderheads, while to the west and south, sheets and bands dominated.  Lightning began to strike to the north - which I failed to capture as my poor 550D didn't like the raindrops that were beginning to fall - and I fled before the wind and water.  Now, armed with plastic bags and a tripod, I am waiting for the storm to arrive at my house so I can try to catch my first lightning :)
